Club and Galaxy Foundation to travel to Port-au-Prince

Galaxy will deliver soccer equipment and supplies to Athletes of Haiti

CARSON, Calif. -- The LA Galaxy announced today the club and the Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation will be traveling to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to deliver soccer equipment and supplies to L'Athletique d'Haiti (Athletes of Haiti) sports program, which was started by Boby Duval in 1996 and gives children from some of the poorest neighborhoods an opportunity to get off the streets, play a sport and receive a daily meal.

The humanitarian effort is being coordinated by Gloria King, Director of Community Development and the Galaxy Foundation, and Janet Sevilla, Community Development Coordinator. King, along with former Galaxy defender Tony Sanneh, will depart for Haiti on Tuesday, March 2 and return on Friday, March 5. In addition to the distribution, the Galaxy will meet and interact with local children on Wednesday, March 3, before conducting soccer clinics for the children of L'Athletique d'Haiti on Thursday, March 4.

Following January's devastating earthquake, the children did not return to L'Athletique d'Haiti for almost ten days at which time 150 of the program's participants showed up at the field with their families. Currently, L'Athletique d'Haiti has approximately 500 displaced families living on their two fields that are being provided food, water and tents by Duval and more than 700 children returning for the soccer program each day.

"We have chosen to reach out to L'Athletique d'Haiti to make a difference in the lives of the children and families, living on their fields and participating in their programs" said King. "We hope to use our sport as a bridge to not only bring soccer equipment and supplies to L'Athletique d'Haiti, but smiles to the faces of children who have been through so much."

In addition to soccer equipment, the Galaxy Foundation is donating food, soap, coolers and other items that are needed throughout Haiti. Sanneh and The Sanneh Foundation's contribution also includes soccer balls, t-shirts, shorts and cleats. Galaxy and MLS partners are teaming up to provide additional support for the visit with adidas and Kwik Goal giving soccer bags, ball pumps and other items, MLS W.O.R.K.S., the league's community outreach initiative, donating t-shirts and Degree Men, a Unilever brand, providing more than 3,000 deodorant sticks to L'Athletique d'Haiti.

"My heart goes out to the children of Haiti," said Tony Sanneh, founder of The Sanneh Foundation. "As soon as I heard of the disaster, I knew I had to help. I am pleased the Galaxy and Galaxy Foundation invited me to be a part of their outreach efforts. My foundation and I strive to unify diverse communities through sport, and help all those in need. In Haiti, we will strive to do both."

The Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting and creating educational, health, and recreational activities and programs for children in southern California, with a specific focus on assisting underserved and at-risk youth. The Galaxy Foundation is committed to encouraging, educating, and empowering the children in the community.

Dispatches: St. Paul soccer standout Tony Sanneh in Haiti, Part II

St. Paul native Tony Sanneh, a former U.S. National soccer team member who has played in various professional leagues, left last week for Haiti, where he's running soccer camps and clinics for kids who otherwise have nothing to do in the earthquake-ravaged areas. In addition, he's also helping with a humanitarian effort. We asked Sanneh to provide updates from his trip. Part I ran last week, and here is Part II:
I woke up this morning at 6:00 am after a huge rain storm last night and immediately thought about all of those displaced kids and hoped they were alright physically and mentally. Fortunately, soccer was still on today and we could keep the momentum going. As I got to practice area, I noticed open fields but the under 17 team and the under 19 team was separated and only one was ready to practice. The coaches told me that they can’t practice at the same time because many of the kids had to share shoes.

From our Kick it Back program, we gave out about 30 pairs of cleats, which quickly brought smiles to their faces. We also dressed the U19 team in full L.A. galaxy gear and got the U17 team into Sanneh Soccer t-shirts and shorts. They all received gear with the message that they were dressing like professionals so they should respect the practice time and give full attention and effort. It worked.
Over the last few days there has been a language barrier so luckily today we had two Canadian volunteers on site, Mohammed the politician, and Joe a real estate mogul. They were able to speak with the coach and bring us together better, and immediately I saw the kids were responding to me. Practice went as planned, and my famed header drills got me through the day. The kids really are very special … they worked and got dirty and constantly were laughing, smiling, and cheering. We finished up here at about noon and had more stops to make.
We went back to the office to get boxes of food, soap, deodorant, and wash clothes and made making small kits by putting them in zip locks. Our host family has a food and medicine distribution center we were going to donate to also. We loaded up, packed, unpacked and organized boxes again. This always seems like hardest part of day. Maybe it is because I am hungry, hot and tired from morning practice or maybe it’s because I hate lifting. Either way, I’m not about to complain or stop.

Afterwards we went to lunch at a Lebanese restaurant and when we got there our driver beeped the horn and a man with a gun came out from behind a wall and opened a metal gate for us to enter. You would never know there was a restaurant back there and it seemed like a part of Haiti that was unaffected, until a mother and daughter came over to say “hi” to us and told us they had lost their father to the earthquakes.

In the afternoon we went to see another man, who runs a soccer project in a very, very poor area of Haiti. His scholarships kids to schools and runs the only youth tournaments in all of Haiti. The program stopped because of the earthquakes but he was getting ready to start up again and was asking for our help. We talked about what we do, how we can help, and when we could see his operations. The drive was long, and upon arriving at home and having a late dinner, I showered and got into bed. I was so tired, It seems like I have been here for weeks, but I’m ready to go at it again early tomorrow.

Two More Added To Palace Baltimore Roster

Baltimore, MD - Crystal Palace Baltimore have made a double signing as they prepare for the upcoming season. Forward Yaikel Perez joins from Sevilla Bayamon FC of the Puerto Rico 1st Division, while Haitian midfielder Kenold Versailles arrives in Baltimore after spending last season at Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
Palace Baltimore Founder and Co-Head Coach, Jim Cherneski, spoke about Perez: "We had Perez come to us during the fall at the very end of our training last year and he showed very well when he was with us. We are pleased to have him; he is a good physical presence and has got good pace. He finishes really well and we expect him to score some goals this year. He is very active, always chasing balls down and winning tackles in our attacking third. He's very skillful as well; he can strike the ball well with both feet. We're excited to have him."

Perez, 25, has spent the past two years playing in the Puerto Rico top flight and won the League Championship in 2008 with Sevilla Bayamon FC, who are the affiliate club of Spanish top flight club Sevilla FC. Perez was also part of the Cuban National team that participated in the 2005 Gold Cup and was one of several players who defected to the United States during the competition. In addition, the clinical goal scorer has Second Division experience after spending the 2006 season with fellow NASL and USSF D2 side Miami FC.

Baltimore assistant coach Todd Wawrousek commented on Versailles: "We were fortunate to have the experience of Kenny at Vancouver but unfortunately for him he was injured for the majority of the season. He is a very composed and versatile player and has the ability to play with confidence both in central midfield and centrally in defense. We feel fortunate to have him as part of our club and hopefully he will have a successful year and be a very productive player for us."

Versailles (pronounced vur-SIGH), 25, joins Palace after spending last season with another NASL and USSF D2 club, Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The central midfielder made a total of eight appearances and scored one goal for the Canadian outfit. Prior to arriving in the U.S., Versailles played six years, 2002-2007, in Haiti's top divison. He spent four years at Racing Club Haitien where he was part of the League-winning team in 2002, followed by two years starring for Roulado. Versailles, 6'2", has represented Haiti at international level, beginning at U-17 in 1999. He was also a member of the U-23 Olympic squad in 2004 before gaining five caps for the full Haitian national team.

Palace Baltimore continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly at Baltimore's Loyola University tomorrow, Wednesday March 10 at 7:00pm. The match will be the first at the school's new Ridley Stadium and will also serve as a fundraiser for Haiti earthquake relief charities.
